The Ministry of Education (MoE), Government of India offered support for the establishment of Centers of Excellence (CoE) for Training and Research in Frontier Areas of Science and Technology (FAST). Further, Ministry of Education explicitly identified multidisciplinary research and training in clean environment (air, water, and land), and sustainable development as thrust areas. Accordingly, IISER Bhopal proposed a CoE, in line with the overall objectives of the FAST program and other recent endeavors by several bodies of the Government of India (e.g., MoES, MoEF, and DST), to study and reduce climate pollutants and enhance the overall sustainability of our planet. This proposal was accepted and funded by MoE, facilitating the establishment of “Center for Research on Environment and Sustainable Technologies (CREST)” at IISER Bhopal.
The chief motivation for the establishment of CREST was the building of a structure that eventually helps understand the interactions between air, water, and earth mega systems on several scales ranging from local to global.
CREST will work on thematic areas including climate change studies, air quality management, atmospheric dynamics, monitoring and management of earth resources through satellite imagery, synthesizing environmentally benign analytical tools/molecular receptors for characterization of environmental pollutants, and applying bioremediation and other techniques of waste management and sustainable development. The research and teaching activities of CREST will encompass both theoretical and experimental approaches and will extensively involve researchers and faculty members from multiple disciplines including Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Earth and Environmental Sciences, Mathematics, and Physics.
